How to create a bouncy blowdry with a hairdryer

Whenever using hot tools, you should always protect your hair against heat damage. We love Kevin Murphy Heated Defense 150ml (RRP £30). Bouncy blowdrys work best with a mousse, to add more volume; we recommend using L’oreal Professional Tecni Art Volume Lift Spray Mousse 250ml (RRP £14.75).

If your hair struggles to hold a style, leave your blowdry to set in velcro rollers rather than hanging down. However, velcro rollers shouldn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. We suggest drugstore-own products, such as Superdrug Large Thermo Velcro Rollers X6 (RRP £3.99).

Step-by-step instructions:

• Apply heat protectant and start by drying your hair until it's around 80% dry.
• Apply hair mousse and split the hair into sections that will lay flat against the round barrel brush.
• Use the concentrated nozzle on the hairdryer, pointing down. Finish drying the hair by pulling it tight, with the brush underneath, for additional volume.
• When the hair is dry, pull the brush from the middle of the section towards the ends and roll it back up to the middle. Focus the heat onto the ends in the brush, continuously brushing the hair down and rolling it back - around 4 or 5 times.
• Repeat all around the hair and leave to cool and set, before shaking the hair out.

How to create a bouncy blowdry with a hot air tool

A really easy way to get a bouncy blowdry without using a hair dryer is using a hot air tool; more commonly known as hot hair brushes. The industry go-to for hot air brushes, and our highest recommendation, is the Revlon Pro Collection One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumiser (RRP £49.99).

Protecting your hair against heat damage is crucial when using any heated tool. We love working with Kevin Murphy Heated Defense 150ml (RRP £30). To help hold the volume and waves in your bouncy blowdry, we suggest using a hair mousse, like L’oreal Professional Tecni Art Volume Lift Spray Mousse 250ml (RRP £14.75).

To hold your hair in place whilst it cools and sets, we recommend using velcro rollers. Drugstore-own products, such as Superdrug Large Thermo Velcro Rollers X6 (RRP £3.99), are just as effective, whilst also affordable.

Step-by-step instructions:

• Apply heat protectant and dry hair until it is 80% dry.
• Apply hair mousse and divide the hair into sections that will lay flat against the hot air tool.
• Dry the sections from underneath, slowly from root to ends.
• When the hair is dry, pass the brush down the hair from underneath to the bottom, then roll the hair back up into the brush.
• Hold the rolled hair in the brush for 30 seconds then unroll it halfway down. Then, turn the brush and move it downwards, almost brushing the hair out of the hot brush.
• For the top of your hair, put it into a mohawk section - blowing out the hair in strips from crown to front.
• Repeat all around the hair and leave it to cool and set, before shaking it out.

How to create a bouncy blowdry with a straightener

Bouncy blowdrys can be made using straighteners - you aren’t just limited to hair dryers or hot air tools! For easier use to create the bouncy wave, we recommend using curved straighteners such as GHD Gold Hair Straightener (RRP £179).

When using straighteners, or any heated tool, you should always use a heat protectant, to protect your hair against heat damage. We recommend using Kevin Murphy Heated Defense 150ml (RRP £30).

Velcro rollers are a great way to support and help hold the shape of your body blowdry, whilst it cools and sets. Drugstore-own rollers, such as Superdrug Large Thermo Velcro Rollers X6 (RRP £3.99), will do the job perfectly!

Step-by-step instructions:

• Apply heat protectant and fully dry your hair.
• Split the hair into sections that will lay flat against the heated plate of the straighteners.
• From the root to mid-section, move the straightener straight down.
• From the midsection to the root, bring the straighter down and slowly roll the straighteners under the hair to create a flick.
• For the top of the hair, work in a mohawk section, moving in straight slices from the crown to the front.
• Repeat all around the hair and leave to cool and set, before shaking the hair out at the end.

How to create a bouncy blowdry with a curler

Bouncy blowdrys can even be made with curling wands, though the curls MUST be brushed out! For large, bouncy waves, we recommend using a large barrel wand, such as the Beauty Works X Molly-Mae Curl Kit Volume 2 (RRP £94.99).

To gently brush out your curls, we suggest using a soft bristle brush, like the Cantu Longer Bristle Paddle Brush (RRP £10).

Step-by-step instructions:

• Apply heat protectant and fully dry the hair.
• Split the hair into sections that sit flat against the wand.
• Alternate curling the hair towards and away from the face for added dimension (though always away, when curling face-framing pieces).
• Repeat all around the head and leave to cool and set, before brushing the curls out with a soft bristle brush.

How to create a bouncy blowdry with a heatless curler

Bouncy blowdrys can even be made without heat, using heatless curlers - though they must ALWAYS be brushed out at the end, like heated curls! Step-by-step instructions:

• Leave hair to air dry, until it is 80% dry and apply hair mousse.
• Part the hair and fold the band in half, sliding the comb underneath the band into the centre of your parting.
• Split the hair into 2 sections and wrap the hair tightly around the fabric, leaving space for looser curls - start with one slice of hair from the section and add more as you wrap.
• Secure the mid-section with the built-in hair tie midway down, and continue wrapping the ends of the hair.
• Fold the end over itself and tie again with the other built-in hair tie.
• Repeat on the other side and wear all day or overnight.
• Gently unwrap both sides and remove the comb at the end, before brushing out the curls with a soft bristle brush at the end.
